Thank you to everyone who filled out our survey, it was very helpful and with the majority of respondents in favour, we can go ahead with our plans (as detailed below), meaning you have helped secure a brillant facility for our community.
It is hoped that the process will start in the autumn and that work can start in the new year!
We need YOUR views to move the project forward.
Our parish council has been very active over the years, working with local people, to make Herne and Broomfield a better place to live. On behalf of residents, the council scrutinises and sometimes opposes planning applications. We respond to consultations, including the Local Plan, report highway problems, have dealt with bees, vandalism, graffiti and much more.
We apply for grants where we can which has helped provide: our multi-use games area, outdoor fitness equipment, community park and BMX track, plus free football training sessions. We also try to improve the sense of community by organising, with the help of volunteers: the Garden Safari, Family Fun Day, Children’s Christmas Party and Santa’s Sleigh. To preserve the amenity for residents our parish council bought the old Catholic hall in 2011, for £90,000. We carried out extensive consultations on the design for a new community centre. The budget was up to £750,000, which was considered a manageable sum to raise through grants and fundraising. Planning permission for the new community centre was granted in 2013. £37,667 has been spent on the necessary surveys and fees. Some grants have been successfully applied for and that, with money from fundraising events, has been earmarked towards the cost of the new build, totalling to date £195,000.
Unfortunately the contractors that put forward the winning design were unable to meet the price they had quoted and we had to go out to tender.
The four quotes tendered for the chosen design were between £1.2M and £1.5M
The major funder has since cut their maximum grant to £50,000
This leaves the Parish Council with a dilemma.
To move the project forward, we would need to take out a low interest Public Works Loan, this is likely to increase the Band D precept in 2016/7 by approx £15 a year (about 29p a week) per household, in order to meet the repayments. It would be less than that for the majority of householders who are on a lower band. We would continue to seek grants and corporate sponsorship, to reduce the loan where possible.
This amazing new building, will have up to the minute facilities, full disabled access, from a design chosen by our community, providing better facilities for local clubs, a meeting place for residents and a hub for local people.
The official opening of the New Centre will take place on Saturday 9th June at 1pm.
All are welcome.

The new Centre is almost complete. We plan to hold our annual parish meeting there on Thursday 24 May. Please come along and have a guided tour of the new building and find out how it is to be managed. You can also get a flavour of what goes on in Herne & broomfield by listening to short talks from local groups and organisations.
We are already getting bookings for family celebrations, weddings and interest from local groups.
The first fix has gone in and boarding out is taking place. Screeding of the main hall is due to take place as soon as the scaffolding is down. Cladding on the roundel is going on.
The Tender period for a management company to service the new community centre closed on 31 January. Meetings will take place to agree a 2 year contract.
Grants have been appied for from Viridor and Awards for All asking for funding towards the cost of Tables and chairs, kitchen equipment, tableware, a defribrillator and solar PV display unit. We will also need funding for curtains and blinds.
The new building is progressing well and is more or less watertight. The floor screed is going in tomorrow Friday 15 Dec.
The building in on track to be finished in the spring/early summer.
Unfortunately we did not win the M & S Energy funding bid but thank you to the 800+ people that voted for our project.

Building of the new Centre is due to start 30th May 2017.
The current hall car park will be unavailable from 22nd May. Users are advised to use School Lane Public Car Park.
Thank you to everyone who supported our Race Night on Saturday at Herne Community Centre. We raised £691.50.
25% will go to Kent Air Ambulance, the remainder towards the new Community Centre.
All systems go!
The Public Works Loan has been approved and BEC Construction Ltd has been awarded the contract to build the new Centre.
Seven companies tendered for the project, each one was examined by the council's quantity surveyor, Betterage & Milsom, to check that they were compliant and were quoting like for like. Two companies were interviewed post tender before the final choice was made.
Work is due to begin on Monday 3rd April to build the new access ramp and alterations to the kitchen of the old hall, which will be out of action for about a week. They will also make an entrance from the public car park, which will be Herris fenced when completed.
The hall car park will still be usable, until they start the main building work at the end of May.
It is intended that the existing hall will continue to be used during the build, albeit with the different access and smaller kitchen space.
The old hall will be demolished when the new building is usable.
We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that users and residents may have to bear during the year it is expected to take to complete the project.
We are currently looking at kitchen equipment and other fittings for the new building.
We have been offered some office equipment/desk but have nowhere to store it until the new building is open. Does anyone have storage space in their spare room or garage, so we can take advantage of this offer?
Our parish council would love to hear from anyone who wishes to help raise funds to fit the new building out 01227 742700
